In 1726 Handel created Alessandro specifically for a star cast: castrato Senesino, and the two prime donne Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni. The story of the glorious conqueror of Asia is set in Scythia, where two rival princesses vie for the hero's love: Roxane the Persian (his prisoner) and Lisaura the Scythian. Increasingly convinced that he is of divine descent, Alexander must confront a conspiracy hatched against him, which will allow him to know the true face of those closest to him, both generals and mistresses. Handel creates a musical firework display of these loves, betrayals and oaths of loyalty, his lyrical science at its peak.
Max Emanuel Cencic holds the title role in this opera, under the direction of choreographer Lucinda Childs and the fiery Athenian baton of George Petrou, whose recent recordings have been highly acclaimed: love, glory and treachery await Alexander!
