Mozart wrote the Coronation Mass in 1779 at the age of twenty-three, commissioned by the Archbishop of Salzburg Colloredo in honour of the commemorative feast of the Coronation of the Miraculous Virgin of the sanctuary of Maria Plain. The Mass was an immediate success at its premiere in Salzburg Cathedral, and was performed again at the Coronations of Leopold II, King of Bohemia, in Prague in 1791, and of Francis II of Bohemia in 1792, Marie Antoinette's nephew, later Francis I, Emperor of Austria. The Mass is the most famous of Mozart's twenty compositions for soloists, choir and orchestra. He displays a virtuoso palette, even making the Agnus Dei the original melody for the Countess's Dove Sono aria in The Marriage of Figaro. This magnificent work, in which choir and soloists alternate, displays, with the help of brass fanfares, the brilliance and splendour of a grandiose opera finale... For this masterpiece, Jean-Christophe Spinosi is surrounded by fervent soloists and the magnificent Choir of the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, proud of its 125 years of existence.
