The invention of the ballet d'action, due to the genius of the French choreographer Noverre, established the total emancipation of dance: gesture was now as strong as speech. Competing with Gluck, Noverre imagined ballets on the most ambitious subjects. While he retained marvellous Baroque episodes, brilliant costumes and impressive machinery effects, he sought above all to render feelings in all their subtlety, from tenderest love to most murderous rage, already heralding future Romanticism.
